Kanye performed at the celebration of Saturday Night Live’s 40th anniversary with two guest stars. Check out the song and video below.
Although the song was originally released during an Adidas ad campaign, Kanye chose to reimagine it live during SNL’s 4oth anniversary.
The original is worth checking out as well; the video was premiered in over 50 theaters worldwide.The song starts nine minutes into a dystopian fashion show, where people of assorted races and heights and dress stand somberly wearing interestingly bland and monotone clothing, while every once in awhile a shot of the new Yeezy Boosts come into the frame. The new shoes are the result of Kanye’s newly fruitful partnership with Adidas. He introduces the video with a somber speech that defends his forward motion to those that “joke around and say why is he still trying”; he answers the question that he poses for himself with “If I see an opportunity I’m gonna go for it…I’m here to crack the pavement and make new grounds…societally and culturally.” He goes on to say that “[He] wants to create something better for you; we have been limited”, and then asks himself the question “when I was on Earth, what did I do to help?”
What follows is the promotion video for his new sneaker, which is being produced for in a limited run of 9,000 pairs, priced at $350 a pair.
The song starts with indiscernible auto-tuned vocals that slowly turn into a refrain of “you’re too wild, and I need you now”. The structure uses the auto-tuned declarations as a foundation and warns the listener that the singer is “bad for you”, as he declares that the subject of the song is “to good to be true”. There are some interesting slow breaks in the song and suddenly Kanye is walking throughout the crowd jeering a bit and looking up from his Napoleon height into the eyes of those models who stand in ranks throughout the entire video. The song ends with a guest vocalist singing variations of the lyrics aforementioned.
The song was also performed recently at SNL 40, which celebrated the 40th anniversary of Saturday Night Live. Along with “Wolves”, Kanye performed “Jesus Walks” lying down and looking at the crowd upside down, which must have been fun.
Sia and VIC Mensa crawl in from stage left and stage right, decked out in black, Sia is sporting her signature wig and Kanye’s team has curated the whole show to demonstrate a very Zoolander derelicte look. For the performance of the song, there was a minimalist set of black with a white square-scapes. Vic Mensa seems to have dyed his hair for the occasion, and he takes some of Kanye’s verses, such as those that start with “you’re a firefly” They are kneeling for the whole time, and Kanye is looking up while chewing gum.
Also at the anniversary party was Win Butler, of Arcade Fire, and Candice Bergen, both of whom introduced Miley Cyrus’ cover of “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”. Jack White was there, and Justin Timberlake helped Jimmy Fallon pay tribute to SNL over the years. Paul McCartney performed “Maybe I’m Amazed”.
