John Zorn W/ Guests @ Village Vanguard 2/14-15

The legendary avant-garde composer, arranger and saxophonist John Zorn continues his 5 day residency at Village Vanguard this weekend with two more star-studded shows. On Saturday, Zorn will play with his Masada Quartet, which features Dave Douglas on trumpet, Greg Cohen on bass, and Joey Baron on Drums. There will be two set times: one at 8:30 and one at 10:30. On Sunday the 15th, he will play three sets: one in the afternoon entitled “In the hall of Mirrors” that will feature Steve Gosling on Piano, Greg Cohen on bass, and Tyshawn Sorey on drums, and then on Sunday night he will conduct a large ensemble that includes avant garde jazz and guitar icon Marc Ribot.

Zorn has been described by Downbeat magazine as one of the “most important composers of our generation” and, given the breadth of his work, he certainly has earned this distinction. Known as much for his jazz composition as he is for his Klezmer-influenced Masada music as well as his love for hardcore and metal, Zorn is truly a composer willing to try any style to express himself. This is the reason he attracts such a variety of talented musicians to share the stage with him, and the reason he has stayed relevant in the music community for such an extended period of time.

This show is a must-see for those who consider them serious music lovers, so if you are with an open-minded date on Valentines (or without any date at all), head to Village Vanguard and be prepared for a truly unique experience. If you find yourself free on Sunday, you can never go wrong seeing Marc Ribot on a stage with John Zorn.
