The trailer for NWA documentary Striaght Outta Compton premiered during the 57th annual Grammy Awards. The trailer opens with a preview by Dr. Dre and Ice Cube who explain why it is the right to release this documentary.
Straight Outta Compton is set for release on August 14. Ice Cube and Dr. Dre are producers for the film. In an press conference concerning the violent lyrics of NWA songs Ice Cube stated, “Our art is a reflection of our reality”.
In the film, the members of NWA are portrayed by Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, and Ice Cube’s son O’Shea Jackson, Jr as Ice Cube. Due to the fact that Ice Cube’s son is portraying him in the movie, there was question over why Eazy-E’s son would not portray him in the movie. However, Lil Eazy-E said that he has been in contact with Mitchell and has helped to mentor him for the role.
“Jason has come to my grandmother’s house where I was born and raised, where my father was born and raised and where N.W.A started,” Lil Eazy-E says. “I reached out to him to give him the support and any advice he needs. He has a big burden on his shoulders to bring forth the character and legacy of my father and the legacy of N.W.A, period.”
It seems that a movie like this will ignite powerful memories for those who are close to the story. The Rolling Stone points out that NWA’s “Fuck tha Police” helped to spark the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Rapper Kendrick Lamar, who has a cameo in the movie, reflected on the time that NWA was big.”When I think of N.W.A, it wasn’t even music to me, it was a real lifestyle,” Lamar says. “Brothas from my neighborhood that made it out.”
