Tori Amos will be releasing remastered and expanded versions of two of her biggest hit records, which will include a variety of unreleased B-sides and rare tracks that couldn’t be included on the original records.
Tori Amos burst onto the music scene in 1992 with her debut record, Little Earthquakes. Two years later, Amos blew the world away again with her Under The Pink record. Almost instantly, she blew the music scene away with her alluring melodies and boldly self-confessional lyrics, a style that was more or less overshadowed by the rising grunge music scene that was just then beginning to dominate the air waves. With Little Earthquakes, Amos had a lot to say to the world, but, as is most often the case, Amos couldn’t quite fit all she wanted to say into the debut release. Thanks to the remasters which will be out soon, the tracks that couldn’t quite make the final cut of the record will be packaged in, allowing many audiences for the first time to sample songs that have previously only been released in British and European markets, and in the occasional “Greatest Hits” package. Now, for the first time, Amos’ first two records will be packaged together along with the previously unreleased tracks that couldn’t make the original record cut. Along with the “forgotten” tracks, the reissues will also include a few selected live recordings from around the same time as the original releases as well as other unreleased cover songs. Her cover of Nirvanna’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is a particular standout, showing off her ability to find a new angle on modern hits by pairing them down to very moderate foundations, such as piano and vocals, a system she was also able to utilize when she covered Radiohead’s “Creep” and Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters”.
Coinciding with the reissues will also be a new 180-gram vinyl pressing of the records, marking the first time the records will be made available on vinyl in the United States. The reissues follow her fourteenth original studio recording, Unrepentant Geraldines, which came out in May of last year. Amos’s career is one that has been celebrated for many years, and the infamous singer-songwriter shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. A feat for which we here at Mxdwn won’t be griping about anytime soon.
