Danish dream-rockers soar throughout the sonic solar system with a superbly lit new live video for their first new song in what seems like a lightyear. Get lost in orbit to “Satellites”
Jonas Bjerre, Bo Madsen, Johan Wolhert and Silas Jørgensen have been labelled as being both indie and progressive rockers, but Bo Madsen prefers to describe their band as having an “Indie Stadium” sound, perhaps something similar to what Coldplay has been going for with their last couple albums. The new track comes at a time when the light from their fifth album, garrulously entitled No More Stories Are Told Today, I’m Sorry They Washed Away // No More Stories, The World Is Grey, I’m Tired, Let’s Wash Awayhad begun to fade. After having made their break with And the Glass Handed Kites, which was critically acclaimed and described as “dreamy thunderstorm pop”.
This new track is part of their newest album which is enigmatically called +/- (pronounced plus, minus). As of January 2013, their contract with Sony was forfeit and their release of this album will be an independent effort. It will be released on April 27th, via Play It Again Sam. Satellites is the first single to be released from the album.
The original bassist had taken leave from the band in 2006, but he has since been reintroduced to the lineup, and it seems as though the directorial choices made for this music involved focusing on him as if to ensure the fact that his presence was noticed. Besides the lead singer, he has the most tight closeup shots.
The new track remains on the safe side of their skewed star-scape brand of rock, but it’s release as a single has caused a good amount of excitement on both sides of the pond, so to speak. The album was recorded in Copenhagen and features producer Michael Beinhorn, who has produced Soundgarden as well as the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The composition of the video has a very live feel, and somehow recalls Usher with all of the intricate laser work. But it goes far beyond, with a scintillating installment of light sculptures that they plan to take on tour with them after the album is released. There is not much variety in the shots, which leaves the viewer’s focus squarely on the song, about which the band has said
“‘Satellites’ is a song we made, about how big life is, I guess, and how you get to choose how to live it. Even if people don’t approve, it belongs to you. We wanted to make the video a celebratory video, because it’s our first new song in moons, and our long lost comrade is back in the gang. It’s a colorful and grand thing, filmed in one day, and it’s just the 4 of us playing our song that we made, about how big life is.”
