The Beginning of a Beautiful Career
Samuel Proffitt might be new to the electronic world, but his debut EP proves that he has what it takes to become a major DJ. Blue Notebook No. 10 isn’t your average electronic album. It isn’t exactly filled with club or dance tracks. Instead, it features five heavily emotional songs that also have an ambient feel to them. They are the type of songs best suited for when you’re alone in your room, with lyrics so intriguing that you have to stare at the ceiling and truly listen to the words. Samuel Proffitt is a singer-songwriter who changed directions after listening to deadmau5 and other influential DJ’s. Proffitt has certainly found his place in this genre but his singer songwriter background is still there, which isn’t a bad thing – it’s just interesting to note his background.
“Cranes (Intro)” is a subtle but powerful opening that sets the tone for the songs to come. The intro begins with a piano but gradually progresses into chilling synthesizers. None of the next four songs are as upbeat as typical EDM cuts, but each have a depth to them that makes them enjoyable to listen to. “Sladky” is an intimate song that is mesmerizing, as is the following song “Nevsky.” Both feature vocals by singer Khai, whose voice is filled with strength. “Nevsky” has a hint of R&B to it, due to Khai’s voice which seems to have soul influences. The beat becomes fun to dance to – but the piano playing softly behind it adds a bit of intimacy.
Crywolf is a fairly well known artist and featuring him was a smart move on Samuel Proffitt’s part. His song “In Flames” is yet another emotional yet hopeful track that draws you in due to Crywolf’s inviting and soulful voice. There are more or less no negative things to say about this EP. It has the right amount of tracks along with the right amount of moods. It has mostly an ambient feel to it but it’s far from a boring set of songs. “Blue Notebook No. 10” is the start of a new artist, and Samuel Proffitt’s career is most certainly filled with endless potential.
