Los Angeles-based retro pop-rock band Only You have released two new songs, “Let Me Burn” And “The Pressure”, via Hit City U.S.A., today.
Only You was founded by singer-songwriter Rachel Fannan, after her departure from the San Francisco psych-rock band Sleepy Sun. This is her first release since Only You released a single, “Applying Myself”, through White Iris Records in October 2012, according to a press release.
So, what do these new songs sound like?
Well, “The Pressure” opens with a solid minute of intricate blues-based electric guitar playing. Then, the drums and bass kick in with a driving rhythm that is bound to get your foot tapping. Lastly, Fannan comes in with a soaring whisper to a scream blues-rock infused vocal. And, the song’s lyrical content seems to be addressing the pressure to make a relationship work in spite of a lack of communication, even with the narrator putting “secrets in my songs for nothing but you.”

In contrast to the up tempo nature of “The Pressure”, “Let Me Burn” is quite slow. But, the arrangement of “Let Me Burn” makes up for what the track may lack in tempo. It begins with a minimalistic approach on the blues and jazz infused guitar line that is backed by a steady snare drum. The musicians are playing only what serves the song, while keeping the listener’s attention squarely on Fannan’s pleading and wailing vocals. Lyrically, “Let Me Burn” appears to detail the pain that stems from a breakup, and struggling to fully let go of that other person.
