Death was formed by three brothers in the mid-1970s and is widely considered the first all-black punk band, and many say they even pre-dated the punk rock movement. A Band Called Death is a documentary that follows the formation and breakup of the group, with commentary from numerous other artists, and is now available for streaming on Qello.
The film begins with the two surviving brothers of the band, Dannis and Bobby Hackney, returning to their hometown of Detroit. They spend time talking about their late brother David, the third member of Death, then explain how they got interested in music.
The 2012 documentary was made by Drafthouse Films. Among the famous faces included are Alice Cooper, Questlove, Kid Rock, Elijah Wood and Henry Rollins.
