The Sonics Announce First New Album In Nearly 50 Years And Release New Song “Bad Betty”

Legendary Washington rock band The Sonics have announced their first album in fifty years, and have released a new song.

The Sonics, known as the first punk/garage band, have announced that they are planning to release their first album since 1967, called This Is The Sonics, on March 31st, 2015. Recorded at Soundhouse Studios in Seattle, the new album reunites the original members the band, Jerry Roslie on keyboard and vocals, Larry Parypa on guitar, and Rob Lind on sax, in addition to Freddie Dennis on bass and Dusty Watson on drums.

In a recent interview with City Pages, Larry Parypa stated,

“The guy who produced it did a great job. If you listen to those teasers [posted on The Sonic’s Facebook Page] you’ll hear early Sonics. He said “I want to take you guys back to the energy and excitement of your first two albums.” That’s what this album is going to sound like, it’s a hard-rocker.”

The Sonics have also announced the release of their first single, “Bad Betty,” a song that shows the band hasn’t lost touch with their hard rock and roll spirit. The Sonics are cited as the first punk/garage band ever, and have been cited as influences of huge acts such as Nirvana, Mudhoney, and The White Stripes.

The Sonics disbanded in 1968, after some members went to college, some to fight in Vietnam, and others to pursue different careers. The Sonics have reunited a few times since, playing select shows and festivals, including Primavera Sound in Spain.

Back with a new record after fifty years, The Sonics are back to prove that they are the heart and soul of American punk rock. You can listen to their new single, “Bad Betty,” below.
