The Mountain Goats have announced a new album, titled Beat The Champ, along with spring tour dates and a new song.
The Mountain Goats, led by John Darnielle, are releasing Beat The Champ, an album that focuses on professional wrestling. The band has also released a new song, “The Legend of Chavo Guerrero,” which you can stream below.
The new album, the band’s fifteenth, was described by author Joseph Fink in a recent statement:
“The songs in Beat the Champ are about the simple and beautiful stories of professional wrestling as seen by fans who need something simple in their messy lives… It is an album about, as the chorus of one of its tracks puts it, “nameless bodies in unremembered rooms.” I think that the entire career of the Mountain Goats has been about giving names to nameless bodies, and remembering unremembered rooms. I can’t think of a more worthy cause.”
The band’s new song, “The Legend of Chavo Guerrero,” tells the story of the “leader of the down-trodden,” a real-life wrestler from Southern California, who Darnielle idolized as a kid.
Darnielle recently stated about the album, “I wrote these songs to re-immerse myself in the blood and fire of the visions that spoke to me as a child, and to see what more there might be in them now that I’m grown.”
The album is currently available for pre-order, on CD, standard double-LP, and deluxe double-LP, which will be pressed on limited edition colored vinyl, and is available here.
The Mountain Goats will be supporting their new album with a string of performances starting in April in Tennessee, and wrapping up in Los Angeles in June.
