The Wombats have not had a record of new material since 2011’s This Modern Glitch. The dry spell has now been proudly interrupted by the release of their new music video for “Greek Tragedy,” released earlier this week.
With the impending release of their first full-length record of original material in four years, The Wombats have elected to up the excitement by creating a new video for “Greek Tragedy,” a single off of their third record, Glitterbug. The video is at once interesting and amusing as it stars one of their fans. The interesting thing is that it showcases the fan in a light that she may not have anticipated. Rather than cast the fan as some sort of typical fangirl, the video turns her into a rabid, obsessive stalker, who eventually hunts down the individual members like Darth Vader hunting down the last of the Jedi. Interspersed with “archival” footage of the fan running into the band on the street and in their studio and their respective homes, the video may be a commentary on the band’s status over the last few years. Recording with a “less is more” attitude, The Wombats have only released two full-length records over the last eight years. During that time, they have garnered well-deserved critical acclaim and generated some commercial buzz. That success may have the band feeling as though they have painted themselves into a corner, unable to branch out into other areas of musical interest. Whether a commentary on the music industry’s desire to keep artists in the same creative box, or an observation on what it means to be a fan, the video for “Greek Tragedy” is an interesting one to behold.
Glitterbug is due out on April 7th. It is their first release since This Modern Glitch, released in 2011.
