Punk rock trio Sleater-Kinney released a new video for their song, “No Cities to Love,” and it features a smorgasbord of well-known guest stars singing along. And, next week, the trio’s eighth album – also called “No Cities to Love” – is out on Sub Pop.
When the group disbanded in 2006, they had defined an era with a total of seven albums that touched on subjects, which ranged from feminism being commercialized to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, according to a review in The Guardian. In a sense by paying tribute to male punk rockers like The Clash or The Who, while writing their own anthemic tracks, Sleater-Kinney endeared themselves to a broad audience of men and women.
Eight years later, the trio has reformed and haven’t lost their spark. The Guardian describes the “No Cities to Love” album as “a towering, fists-up record of thundering guitars and soaring hooks – from Price Tag’s rally against consumerism to Bury Our Friends’ grownup anxieties.”
The video for the title track is a quirky twist on what fans can expect from the new album, because the band recruited a cast of celebrity friends to sing along with the track on their laptops or mobiles, according to Brooklyn Vegan. It features stars like: Andy Samberg, Fred Armisen, Gerard Way, Ellen Page, Sarah Silverman, The Walking Dead‘s Norman Reedus, Miranda July, J Mascis, Natasha Lyonne, Connie Britton of ABC’s Nashville, and many more. In addition to the celebrity appearances, the Wall Street Journal’s Speakeasy points out that “No Cities to Love” video is a bit strange because “the music is mostly in the background, and all the quirks of people singing alone are left in.” Although, maybe that’s also part of it’s charm, along with Miranda July’s dancing.
