The Staves, an English folk-rock sister trio, are getting ready to release their new album, “If I Was”. The new album was produced by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver fame. It is due out on March 23, and in anticipation of the release date, the sisters premiered a track earlier this week, called “Steady”.
The Staves previously worked with Vernon on their “Blood I Bleed” EP that was released in 2014. “Steady” is the early single, and it showcases the sisters vocal talents. Consequence of Sound states, “this latest song manages to communicate great emotional depth through its warm, layered instrumentation and lovely, lithe harmonies.”
“Steady” opens with a simple moderately paced guitar line, and later moves into an uptempo sound featuring a drum track and multi-layered guitar parts, while retaining the sisters’ dynamic harmonies. Despite the song’s changing musical landscape, the harmonies are the constant – or if you like, steady – portion of the track, and with the music expertly structured to emphasize them.
The Staves new song definitely has the potential to become something that you’re humming for the rest of the day. And, once again, their new album, “If I Was”, was supposed to be out on February 2nd, 2015, via Nonesuch/Atlantic Records. However, UK-based blog DiscoPop cites an email from the sisters, saying that the release date is now going to be March 23rd, due to circumstances beyond their control.
