The annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert will take place in New York’s Carnegie Hall in 2015, as it celebrates its 25th year. Big names at the concert include composer Philip Glass and experimental rockers the Flaming Lips and Laurie Anderson.
The event will take place on March 5, 2015. According to Rolling Stone, Tibetan musician Tenzin Choegyal and Canadian roots musician Ashley MacIsaac will also be playing at the benefit, as well as the Grammy-nominated Sturgill Simpson and Patti Smith with Her Band and Jesse Smith. Honorary Chairpersons for the event include Chuck Close, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Uma Thurman and Arden Wohl.
Tibet House US is a non-profit educational institution and cultural embassy founded at the request of the Dalai Lama in 1987, to ensure the survival of the unique Tibetan civilization. This isn’t the first time for the Flaming Lips, as Wayne Coyne and company performed at the 2011 Tibet House event. Philip Glass also regularly takes part in the concert. Tickets are already available for this year’s benefit concert, including special gala packages, which offer concert tickets plus a dinner reception with the performers.
The Flaming Lips will also be headlining the Coastline Festival and Austin Psych Fest in 2015. Over the holidays, they covered “Happy X-mas (War Is Over)” with Yoko Ono and played New Year’s shows with Foxygen. It seems collaborations were the theme of 2014 for The Flaming Lips, who also released With A Little Help From My Fwends, track-by-track cover of the Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, with other artists along for the ride. On December 31, 2014, they released a video of a live performance of “Evil Will Prevail” for the first time.
