An Australian N.W.A. fan uploaded a bootleg recording of the trailer for the upcoming biopic Straight Outta Compton, which Ice Cube later showed the recording during his show in Sydney.
The trailer begins with narration from Paul Giamatti, who plays N.W.A. manager and co-founder of Ruthless Records, Jerry Heller. Over images of the LAPD and other scenes of 1990s South Central Los Angeles, he says, “Let me tell you what I see here: A lot of raw talent, swagger, bravado. People are scared of you guys, they think you’re dangerous, but you have a unique voice — the world needs to hear it.”
It goes on to show Eazy-E, played by Jason Mitchell; Dr. Dre, played by Corey Hawkins; and Ice Cube, played by the rapper’s son, O’Shea Jackson Jr. The movie was officially announced in 2009, but is finally scheduled to release on August 14, 2015.
In April, director F. Gary Gray did an interview with radio station KCRW. “It’s not unlike Social Network or American Graffiti where you take a place and time in America, especially as it relates to popular culture, and you see the shift, and they were right there and created part of the pivot that America took in entertainment,” he said during the interview.
Though Ice Cube is still performing live and acting in films, his music hasn’t been forgotten. In fact, his track “You Know How We Do It” was featured on the Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack.
