Experimental rockers Deerhoof have released a new video for “Exit Only,” featuring Oscar-nominated Michael Shannon.
Punk-noise band, Deerhoof, have released a new video for the song “Exit Only,” which features Michael Shannon. The Revolutionary Road actor plays two characters, one with voodoo-like powers over the other, who freezes the other’s hand and makes his teeth fall out, to the background of Deerhoof’s new Ramones-energized song “Exit Only.”
Deerhoof recently released their thirteenth album in November, La Isla Bonita, to critical praise. Spin called the album, “a maraschino cherry bomb placed atop a smashed-together sundae.”
After Deerhoof released La Isla Bonita, they immediately embarked on their North American tour, which concluded in Canada, followed by a tour in Japan, which wrapped before the holidays.
As previously mentioned, La Isla Bonita is Deerhoof’s twelfth album, over a twenty-year career that began in San Francisco in 1994. The band began as a duo between Rob Fisk and Greg Saunier, later adding Kelly Goode and Satomi Matsuzaki on vocals. After Fisk and Goode quit the band, Deerhoof added guitarists John Dieterich and Chris Cohen. The band has been steadily releasing music every one to two years since the band was formed.
Many rock artists, including St. Vincent, Dirty Projectors, and TV on the Radio, site Deerhoof as an influence, and Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards wrote in Talkhouse that , “Deerhoof was the band that slapped me with the truth that a rock band could be anything I wanted it to be.”
That’s no surprise, considering Deerhoof not only have created their own unique blend of noisy-punk-pop music, but have also been self-recording and self-releasing their records from the beginning of their band-ship. Members of Deerhoof have often been sought after for their recording and mixing talents.
Greg Saunier spoke with DIY about the making La Isla Bonita, and about their philosophies toward making records,
“The only thing that’s ever worked for us is to remember we’ve been given the gift to make a new record, so let’s go wild, [do] the craziest thing we can think of and assume it will bomb. We don’t feel any responsibility, it’s always just a last hoorah. I think, ‘what would we want our swan song to be?’ A celebration.”
Deerhoof’s latest album La Isla Bonita was released November 11th on Ployvinyl Records, and you can watch their music video for “Exit Only” below.
