After a long spell of radio silence from the Canadian indie rocker, she has released a peppy new jingler.
Before this week, it had been seven years since Emily Haines had released any new solo material, despite activity with her indie rock band, Metric, who are based out of Toronto, Canada. They last released an album in 2012, called Synthetica, and supported it with a tour that included playing Coachella, where the above picture was taken.
“Lightening Strikes” is a motivational song about persistence and dedication to problem solving. The song was created, as you can see below, through collaboration with the toy company GoldieBlox, who are committed to empowering and inspiring young women to explore and develop their hands-on learning skills. It’s almost like Legos just for girls. The video takes the viewer on a lighthearted journey with deeper implications, which discuss motivation and personal integrity. The main point can be summed up with the simple saying, that if at first you don’t succeed try and try again. And that is exactly what the video’s protagonist does. The video starts of with some quick background information, the fact that Goldie’s car had failed to start, and moves back towards the garage, where she continues to work through the night on the design until she reaches the breakthrough moment, after reading up and trying different designs over and over again. The next day, as the race begins, the car speeds off and the look of fulfillment and determination in our character’s eyes says it all. You can’t get something from nothing, and you get out what you put in.
It is interesting to note that Emily Haines’ return to solo music is through the thematic vein of perseverance, since it has been so long since she released anything on her own. The story of the video and the song seem as relevant to her as it would to any of us.
