Kate Nash Launches Her Girl Gang TV Online Channel

Kate Nash premiered her introductory episode of Girl Gang TV on YouTube. Take a look at the first episode and stay tuned for more.

Kate Nash wanted to create a feminist community to express ideas, and that’s what she has done with her new Girl Gang TV channel on YouTube.

The show is still in its early stages, with only one introductory episode and a teaser trailer under its list of uploads. The trailer features punky riot grrrl-inspired music, with the words “grrrl gang” scrawled on someone’s knuckles in black marker.

Nash’s newest project takes viewers back to a time when Kathleen Hanna spearheaded the 1990s emergence of women on the alternative rock scene. Embracing the term “riot grrrl,” these groups preached politics as much as they played music. It was an invigorated new wave of feminism.

Girl Gang TV expresses many of these same goals. In the opening episode, one of Nash’s colleagues describes the show as a place for people to talk about feminism, music, art, current events or anything that’s on their minds. Nash’s goal is to create a community where people can express ideas freely.

Nash says the show is partly about politics, but mostly about spreading ideas around. She writes:

“GIRL GANG TV is a global invitation to a community of feminist girls, boys, women, men and those who identify as non-binary. We want to learn ideas, share ideas, inspire and challenge public perception, challenge the media and each other. We are searching for the truth and spreading the love, life skills, self-awareness and confidence wherever we can. In GIRL GANG we want to live a more conscious life, we want to better ourselves for the good of others and for the planet. We believe in equal rights, human rights and animal rights and will use the arts and our creativity to spread our message and encourage others to do so too. Our motto is: ‘Make cool shit and change the world while doing so.’

Her group Girl Gang recently released a cover of a Fidlar song, and Nash just finished special show with Watsky.

Kate Nash performed for an intimate crowd at Sonos Studio on December 18 as part of her promotion of the new show. She also participated in a question and answer session with fans.

Nash says she wants Girl Gang TV to spark real social change. She states:

I feel like it’s our responsibility together to start making noise and taking action. We need to have a more “fight it” attitude, get angry, make some waves, be loud. There’s absolutely been progression, but we don’t want to take two steps forward and then one step back. I personally think our generation has sat back a bit, because we could, which is awesome, but let’s not let that slip!
