Modest Mouse has officially released the recorded version of “Lampshades on Fire,” a song the band has been performing live for almost three years.
Washington-bred rock band Modest Mouse have gradually announced news discussing their highly anticipated forthcoming album, Strangers to Ourselves, which follows 2007’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank.
After shutting down the Internet with a brand new Instagram account, posting revealing photo of a record labeled “Lampshades on Fire,” performing at KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmasin LA and unveiling the cover art for their latest record, the band has premiered their latest single.
“Lampshades on Fire” features dark lyrics shadowed by a lively, upbeat tune. Consequence of Sound writes, “Over slightly funk-afied guitars and drums that are perhaps just a hair’s breadth away from a jam sound, Isaac Brock delivers lyrics about life’s repetitive futility in his typical slurred howl.” He sings, “We have scars in our bones/ We’ll eat your food, we’ll throw the stone/ This is how it’s always gone/ And this is how it’s going to go.” With this new song, Modest Mouse reestablishes their ability to reclaim their rightful spot among the greats in today’s indie rock-verse.
