Neutral Milk Hotel has announced their final tour, beginning in April in North Carolina.
According to Pitchfork, after spending the last two years touring, Neutral Milk Hotel has announced their final tour in 2015. The band wrote on their website:
“Dear friends we love you but it’s time to say goodbye for the never ending now to announce that spring 2015 will be our last tour for the foreseeable future and so we extend our deepest gratitude to all the beautiful people who came to see us over the last year…We’d also like to give thanks to ms. aurora borealis, father foam horse, and mr. valentich for their collaborative contributions to the “womb rume” message that made its way onto this ear area only a few months ago, but from now on, all ciphers shall be sealed exclusively by the meister milk. thank you.”
In 1999, Neutral Milk Hotel broke up after releasing only two LPs, citing frontman and founder Jeff Mangum’s nervous breakdown and disenchantment with the music industry.
Since the break up of the band, Jeff Mangum has appeared rarely in live performances, including a performance in New Zealand requested by friend and Tall Dwarf’s Chris Knox. Mangum also performed with bands Elf Power and The Intstruments. In 2007, Mangum was credited on The Apples In Stereo album New Magnetic Wonder, on which he played drums.
In 2012, Mangum performed at Coachella, making the performance Neutral Milk Hotel’s first major performances since the break up. In 2012, Magnum also headlined All Tomorrow’s Parties music festival.
In April 2013, it was announced that Neutral Milk Hotel would embark on a reunion tour across the US, on which Jeremy Thal joined the band as a multi-instrumentalist. Now, Magnum has announced on his website that Neutral Milk Hotel’s final tour will take place in 2015. Link to tickets below.
Magnum told Greg Kot in an interview in 1997,
“There’s a reason why people listen to music. There’s a reason why if you’re bored you just may take $12 and spend it on a record. I do that a lot. I bring a record home and it connects with me like nothing else. In my ideal situation, somebody will do that with my record.”
