LISTEN: The DØ Release New Song “Sparks”

French/Finnish pop duo The Dø have released a new song “Sparks,” off their upcoming album Shake Shook Shaken, out January.

French/Finnish indie band The DØ have released new song “Sparks.” The duo, which consists of singer Olivia Merilahti and multi-instrumentalist Dan Levy have released the new song off their upcoming LP, Shake Shook Shaken, which will be out January 2015 on their label Siamese Squid.

The new song “Sparks,” shows the band going in a new direction, using a minimalist approach to recording, but producing a bigger sound. Singer Olivia Merilahti told COS about the new song stating, “[It’s] a song about people in exile searching for new cities, new landmarks, traveling through no man’s land. It’s the poetic side of a post-apocalyptic situation.”

The duo have achieved major popularity in France after the release of their first two albums A Mouthful and Both Ways Open Jaws. Their latest album, Shake Shook Shaken, has already been released in France to positive reception and popularity, and went to number 1 on France’s digital chart.

The duo formed while writing music for French film Empire of the Wolves, and continued working on music for films together and writing songs for The DØ in their spare time. On their latest album, the duo told Consequence of Sound that they recorded in an “eighteenth century pastoral water tower,” and that they “deliberately set down their acoustic instruments to focus on a more minimal set-up of a keyboard and laptop,” as singer Olivia Merilahti said.

“Our aim with Shake Shook Shaken was to take ownership of the sounds that had previously been undervalued, while going with a more pop aesthetic. We wanted to make a luminous record to reach as many people as possible, without having it fall in on itself.”

The twosome had a busy year, with a sold-out European tour, a performance on French TV show Le Grand Journal, and a cover story in french magazine Les Inrocks. Now they’re releasing their newest album Shake Shook Shaken, and will go on tour again in 2015.

Their new song “Sparks,” represents their new minimalist and accessible sound, as Merilahti explains,

“Our aim with Shake Shook Shaken was to take ownership of the sounds that had previously been undervalued, while going with a more pop aesthetic. We wanted to make a luminous record to reach as many people as possible, without having it fall in on itself.”

The DØ’s new album will be released January 27th, and will feature their latest release “Sparks.”
