Contemporary R&B singer and eclectic remixer Twin Shadow has released a new single that echoes a simple plea. Check it out!
After a long hiatus from recorded releases, besides his single “To The Top”, which came out on April 15th of this year, the Brooklyn based singer, producer, remixer and novelist has dropped his latest work on the world with the new single below that awaits your listening pleasure. His original music has in the past walked a fine line between such descriptive and specific genres as chillwave and synthpop, and good ole’ contemporary Rhythm and Blues. He has also added a substantial amount of material to the world of remixes, reimagining such tracks as “Floating Vibes” by Surfer Blood, “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga and “Everything is Embarrassing” by Sky Ferreira. “Turn Me Up” is, without a doubt, a song that leans more heavily towards R&B, although the dynamic nature of the vocal effects blend it more into a unique genre that is current.
Despite the fact that it is current, the song features many familiarly nostalgic qualities. The opening seconds drop a beat that sounds as though it could have come out of some Golden-Age hip hop track. Then, we hear the first verse with its reverb and delay, and we are shocked at around 30 seconds in, at “the sooner I’m safe as I try to forget you” with a dub-like explosion of static, which becomes a refrain that reoccurs, and is later replaced with a bassy walk down that is more subtle. A whisper of the static shock comes back in slightly during the chorus, which also offers a big boost in the dynamics, and a swaying vocal line that evokes Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors”. The chorus drops out into an affected second verse where our singer seems to be farther away in the background as though he is receding even as he asks “hold on tight, don’t you ever forget me” amid the static electro shock breaks that return from the first verse. The rhythm section harkens back to an 80s production sound, with that roomy drum beat with lots of gain, and there is some subtle chorus parts happening in the fade out, which all together lead to a very stylized piece of work.
Twin Shadow has signed with Warner Bros, following the release of his second full length album, Confess, in 2012, and it looks like this track will be on his newest effort, which we look forward to hearing soon.
