Celebrated experimental rockers Liars offer a new extended video for their single “Mask Maker,” with a provocative blend of minimal and maximal elements that is bound to leave an impression.
Sonically, “Mask Maker” touches on some of the more aggressive tendencies in both electronica and post-punk, offering a dark, looping aural landscape.
Video directors Zen Sekizawa & Ernesto Lomeli match the auditory experience with repetitive images of colored yarn flying across the face of the band’s multi-instrumentalist Aaron Hemphill. As the video goes into its extended outro, Hemphill’s form becomes distorted as the colored yarn begins to overwhelm the screen. The results are impossible to look away from, combining the best visual aspects of a lava lamp and a train crash.
Fans of Liars will already be familiar with “Mask Maker,” since it is the lead-off track from the full-length Mess, released this January. The band is also offering a free MP3 download of the extended version of the song, which can be found here.
Mess has already made many short lists for album of the year, including Rough Trade, Uncut, The Quietus and Crack Magazine. BBC 6 Music just ranked Mess #13 on their year ending poll, while Urban Outfitters ranked the album #30.
Liars seems to be coming off of a hot streak, having released two singles simultaneously on November 9, “Poison Bender” and “At The Mercy Of Her Mind”.
