A silence since My Morning Jacket‘s last record Circuital, released back in 2011, has turned into a waterfall of new material and plans for the future. More than a year after Jim James’ statement to Rolling Stone that MMJ are ready to get to work on a new record, we’ve got a confirmation that James & Co are preparing several albums for release in 2015-2016.
“I just had tons of songs this time,” Jim James told Rolling Stone of the dual release. “We didn’t even get to all of them.”
As reported by pastemagazine.com, the band is currently working with 24 songs they’ve deemed ‘solid contenders’ for release, separating them into unique albums with distinct sounds – the first one, almost finished mixing, due to be released April 2015, and the second record planned for release sometime in 2016.
In addition to a massive My Morning Jacket release, Jim James has already started working on a second solo album, hoping to put it out in 2016, according to Jambase.
“The whole Jacket thing is so much about us playing together and creating this circle of power,” the singer tells Rolling Stone. “The solo record is more of a patchwork. It’s like one person sitting there making a quilt as opposed to five people building a house at the same time.”
It seems like participation in folk supergroup The New Basement Tapes with Rhiannon Giddens, Elvis Costello, Marcus Mumford and the others performing Bob Dylan’s previously unheard songs like “Nothing To It,” “Six Months In Kansas City” has inspired Jim James incredibly for the next round of his career.
Although, in the upcoming records expect surprises from the singer with him saying:
“I love making each record sound different. I love the thrill of putting on a record and feeling like you got the wrong one from the factory.”
