St. Vincent has released two new songs, “Pieta” and “Sparrow”. These songs were released as part of her new limited 10-inch record sold for Record Store Day’s Black Friday event.
Both songs described as moody ballads by SPIN, seem to be a little different that the St. Vincent songs fans are used to. In the song “Pieta” the beginning falsely sets up fans to believe it may be an up-beat track. Once St. Vincent’s mellow voice appears, there is tension created by her somber sounding voice with the steady rhythm in the background. Throughout the song, this tension is never resolved, but ends up creating a unique sound.
As for her second song “Sparrow”, the melody is very piercing. St. Vincent’s voice brings together the odd sounds that seem to not quite fit into the background. The different sounds of the song finally come together by the end of the track, until the music fades into a haunting ending. Throughout the track she sings the lyrics “Eyes on the Sparrow”.
In addition to the release of her Record Store Day Black Friday tracks, St. Vincent recently performed in the Le Guess Who? Festival and the Austin City Limits festival with Belle & Sebastian.
