NYC rap duo Run the Jewels announced via twitter that their tour bus broke down and their merch trailer caught on fire, prompting them to cancel a show in Montreal.
NYC based rapper duo Run the Jewels have cancelled their Montreal show due to a series of unfortunate events, documented by the El-P’s twitter. Apparently, the group’s tour bus has been broken since before their St. Louis show, and has officially died. On top of that, their trailer of merchandise caught on fire, destroying boxes of albums, shirts, and more.
Rapper El-P originally tweeted a mock voice message, stating that the rapper “has no voice,” their bus is dead, the merch trailer caught fire, and that the duo was on their way to Toronto via airplane. El-P then tweeted that the Montreal show was cancelled, and that they would make it up as soon as possible. El-P also tweeted that they were still scheduled to play at Toronto, and was thankful that everyone was still “alive.”
Not the only musicians to be hit with tour bus problems this week, Interpol and Hundred Waters also experienced a tour malfunction when they were trapped in a snowstorm in Buffalo, NY for forty eight hours, canceling a show in Boston.
Run the Jewels, a rap duo featuring rappers Killer Mike and El-P, recently released their second studio album Run the Jewels 2, in October of this year. The duo released the album early for free, in spirit with the free digital release of their first album, 2013’s Run the Jewels.
Run the Jewels 2 has received rave reviews from Metacritic, where the album received 90 out of 100, based on 32 critic reviews. A review from Consequence of Sound reviewed the album, stating, “An album like RTJ2 is rare. Decades from now, this album may just be revered as one of the best hip-hop records of our era, the total synchronicity of two talented artists reaching the apex of their prime.”
Run the Jewels also announced a remix of Run the Jewels 2, which will replace the vocals with cat sounds, and feature artists such as Prince Paul, The Alchemist, and Just Blaze. The remix album will drop in 2015, and the proceeds will go to charity.
In an interview with Slate, rapper El-P said about making music with Killer Mike, “…the records are really just an extension of our friendship and our time together. As much as at it as extension of our artistic desires, the real magic comes from the fact that when we’re together we can create something that we won’t create on our own.”
The rappers are currently on tour supporting Run the Jewels 2, playing in the northeastern US, Canada, Europe, and Australia. After cancelling their Montreal show, they are still scheduled to play in Toronto and will continue the rest of their tour.
