Legendary singer song writer Steve Earle is releasing his 16th solo album on February 17th next year. Recording is almost done down in Nashville, and a single awaits your ears and your soul.
It’ll be Steve Earle’s 16th solo album, and it’ll also be his first album since ‘The Low Highway’ came out in 2013. This album, however is geared up to be a more cathartic experience for both Steve Earle and all of us. Apparently, it is steeped in the blues and taps into a truly blue area within Steve Earle’s songwriting and creative experience. He explained earlier that he was drawn away from country and back into the blues after he experienced a divorce with his seventh wife, Allison Moorer. He said
“Everything that happens to me will find it’s way into my lyrics, which can be an advantage as a writer and a disadvantage as a person. I’m not trying to be mean. But I’m not gonna not write about what’s happening, so there’s a lot of sad stuff here. It was a good time to make a blues record.”
Another impetus to write blues songs that appear on the album was the proficiency with which his band, The Dukes, handles that form of music. Steve Earle, though a solo musician, has played with many different backing bands throughout the years, and has commented that his current band is heavily blues influenced. He said that his guitarist had cut his teeth on blues music in Texas. According to Earle, most of the material was written on the road, which befits its name, ‘Terraplane’. The music on the album is graced by Steve’s old party worn voice, steeped in the legend of a thousand tours and eternal hard living.
The single below is a great example indicative of the type of music on the album. Check out the subtle drenched guitar in the background. Chris Masterson’s slide guitar work is the refined essence of loose, and Earle’s voice is instantly recognizable and comforting, yet there is a newness in his blues that speaks to the trueness of his muse, which is lost love and separation. It is honest and conveyed upfront without extensive finicking that is the plague of so much music with good potential that ends up being lost in the polishing process.
