One listen to Giorgio Moroder, and you can hear why Daft Punk wanted to work with him. Moroder has an ear for electronic music, and his latest track “74 Is The New 24” showcases this.
What makes the song most interesting is the context behind its creation. While Moroder is a legend in the electronic music community, recently, he’s best known for his work with other artists in the genre. He’s produced everyone from Donna Summer in the 1970s when disco reigned supreme, to his work with Daft Punk on Random Access Memories in 2013.
Not many artists can claim the sort of longevity that Moroder has in the industry. His latest work on “74 Is The New 24” is some of the first solo material he’s released in 30 years.
You might expect an artist like Moroder, who was born in 1940 and has been making popular music since the disco era, to sound dated. The opposite is true in his latest track and in his work overall. “74 Is The New 24” sounds fresh, hip and interesting.
The music pulsates from a low, soft thud in the beginning, then builds into a track that rumbles your core. An electronic voice intones over the bass beat “74 is the new 24.” Moroder, who is 74 years old, seems to be right about this.
The imagery in the video is similar in theme to the only lyric in the song. It shows a digital image of a man done in the style of neon lights. The man is running, keeping up with cars, rhinos and leopards. The man is clearly pushing himself to his limits, and succeeding. It’s as if he is saying “I’m still here, and I’m as strong as ever.”
His newest album will feature collaborations from Britney Spears, Sia, Kylie Minogue and Charli XCX.
Moroder talked about the second dawn of his career, saying the biggest influence for him was the collaboration with Daft Punk.
Daft Punk, who I love. After they asked me to be on their record I started to get offers to DJ, which I had never done, and that was a great thing, and then I started to get offers for a deal, and Sony/RCA was the best, so I went with them. And I love so many artists, working on the new video with Jai Lewis, and collaborating with Sia, Kylie Minogue, I met with Lady Gaga, who was terrific, so talented. [Moroder re-mixed Gaga and Tony Bennet’s “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love”]. At my age, in 2014, I was more than happy. And now, between my collaborations and DJing, I love my second career.
