The Radiohead guitarist has come up with yet another groundbreaking soundtrack for a film. Here’s the full list of songs on the upcoming album, along with a few details about the soundtrack.
If there’s one thing Jonny Greenwood knows how to do well, it’s writing an incredible soundtrack for a film.
Not only is Greenwood the guitarist for one of the most fascinating bands of the past few decades, Radiohead, he is a talented songsmith on his own. His latest soundtrack work is on the film Inherent Vice, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
The film is based on Thomas Pynchon’s novel Inherent Vice. It’s a crime drama, but with a comedic edge. Inherent Vice follows a private investigator as he tries to find out what happened to his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend after he disappears without a trace.
Inherent Vice features many big-name stars, including Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio del Toro, Jena Malone, Maya Rudolph and Martin Short. It makes sense that such a huge film would have a soundtrack penned by Greenwood. He has composed music for award-winning films since 2003.
The soundtrack is set for release on December 15. The soundtrack includes a special treat in addition to the music Greenwood composed for the film itself. One song on the soundtrack, “Spooks,” is actually a Radiohead song that has been redone by Supergrass. The soundtrack also features music from Neil Young and other artists.
The trailer for Inherent Vice captures the vibe of the 1970s; big hair, thick eyeliner and hideous floral shirts. The music in the trailer is upbeat, funky and slightly quirky. It’s the perfect backdrop for a story about a gumshoe caught in a tangled mess of weird relationships.
Inherent Vice adds to Greenwood’s already-long list of major soundtrack work. He scored the film Bodysong in 2003, then went on to compose incredibly expansive scores for There Will Be Blood and Norwegian Wood. More recently, he’s contributed to scores for We Need To Talk About Kevin and The Master. He is currently a composer-in-residence for the BBC Concert Orchestra. Not a bad track record.
