If The New Basement Tapes weren’t already good enough, Haim and Johnny Depp helped contribute to a glorious show that will not soon be forgotten. And we’ve got the videos to prove it.
If you haven’t yet heard of The New Basement Tapes, there is no doubt that you soon will. Previous articles have discussed the formation of the band, various song and video releases, and the coverage of their recent show in Los Angeles. This super-band is bringing back to music what many of us have dearly missed. The special convergence of artists including Marcus Mumford, Elvis Costello, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James and Rhiannon Giddens was assembled by producer T. Bone Burnett to make magic from the formerly lost and unused lyrics of Bob Dylan. What could possibly be better than this combination of artists and music? Possibly special guests including Johnny Depp on guitar and Haim contributing their stunning vocals? No need to question any further. This all happened, and it’s on video for you to watch over, and over, and over…
The videos show the frontrunners of the band having a blast performing their compositions, while Johnny Depp jams away on guitar in the back and the Haim sisters provide excellent rhythm on the tambourine to accompany their soulful vocals. The video for “Kansas City” starts with some shuffling around and discomfort on stage, but it isn’t long until the guitar begins and Marcus Mumford starts out on vocals, and soon enough guitars are strumming, vocals are ringing out, and feet are tapping along to the steady drum beat. The ultimate jam session commences and the gathering of incredible artists sing and play their hearts out to the incredibly catchy tune.
Rhiannon Giddens strong vocals start out the video for “Duncan and Jimmy” where the remainder of the group can be seen passionately tending to the rhythm and their instruments. Johnny Depp continues to jam out on his guitar, and at least one Haim sister can be seen keeping beat in the background. The song offers a powerful ending and gives way to a roaring crowd who seemingly couldn’t get enough. These videos are a must-see, but be aware: you will watch each several times, losing any productivity for at least a half hour.
