Lorde gives a “saucy” new flavor to Jeremih’s “Don’t Tell Em” song in a live lounge BBC radio cover. She turns the catchy hip hop anthem into her own mystifying version.
You’ve probably heard the tune played on your radio multiple times already in one day and now it’s stuck in your head. Stereogum explains, “The Chicago R&B singer Jeremih’s YG/DJ Mustard collab “Don’t Tell ’Em” is one of 2014′s great stealth hits, a smooth and wormy fuck-anthem that worked in a brilliant Snap! interpolation and hit its chart peak months after it appeared on Soundcloud.” Well, it will most likely continue to be a hit song that just won’t leave your ears alone ever since Lorde’s dreamy vocals have given “Don’t Tell Em” a bit of a royal touch.
She has received a lot of praise from this cover. Fader writes, “The cover was strong enough to inspire Annie Mac to effuse, “You could do hip-hop!” to which Lorde replies with giggle, “I’m fine where I am.” Lorde! You’re so modest.” It has also been mentioned; however, she received a not-so-friendly comment by a recent music partner, DJ Diplo, in which he states in a Twitter post, “probably-in-jest, fairly tasteless, very Diplo-esque.”
Lorde cleverly responds to Diplo with a sharp comment of her own:
“Should we do something about your tiny penis hm.”
Fader explains, “Now, keep in mind, Diplo’s Major Lazer project is featured on the Mockingjay OST (in which Lord had released her new song “Yellow Flicker Beat” for the soundtrack), he recently remixed her Pure Heroine single “Tennis Court,” and recent Billboard profile revealed that the two have been collaborating in some capacity—so, this could all be some good-natured ribbing, who knows. Regardless, points to Lorde, she’s got jokes.” Lorde seems to be able to handle criticism and jokes pretty well, as she has also been recently spoofed in a South Park episode.
