Not Like Lenny
Lolawolf contains all the elements needed to be good, catchy and cool. While the band resides in NYC, they were formed in LA while front-lady Zoe Kravitz (yes, Lenny Kravitz’s daughter who was born in their awesome Venice Canal-front home in Venice Beach) was filming a movie, going on to release a well-received EP before dropping their first full-length, Calm Down.
Kravitz gets plenty of help from bandmates Jimmy Giannopoulos and James Levy of Reputante. While none of them are exactly A-list celebrities or musicians, they’ve got a lot of popular friends, including A$AP Rocky, who appears in their video for “Jimmy Franco” (which sounds like something Robyn would have released in the late-90s) and Miley Cyrus, who they’ve played shows with.
A lot of Lolawolf’s music caters toward the young, late-night mischief makers and the fun and lust and uncertainty that comes with it all, which is demonstrated in the lyrics for “What Love Is:” “I wanna know what love is, I really hope that it’s not you.” The music video for “AYO” features Kravitz sipping on a 40-ounce and is complete with pot leaf and Kool-Aid Man graphics and the lyrics “Get your friends high, get your friends high.”
Lolawolf channel their inner old school hip-hop roots for “Bitch,” which is a track derived from a moment at an Outkast show when Giannopoulos started rapping lyrics over Outkast’s song. For the most part, Kravitz writes the lyrics, but it took Jimmy some coaxing to get her to comfortably sing “Who’s a badass bitch that nobody heard that everybody heard of?”
Kravitz already has an impressive acting background – she was born into fame and forming Lolawolf has now put her on another level of impressive. If she doesn’t want to become a pop star, then she should chill out for a minute, because she’s well on her way.
