French artist Lulu Gainsbourg has released a video for the title track to his upcoming album, Lady Luck. The track features Gainsbourg in a casino, matching wits with three other gamblers.
Lulu Gainsbourg, son of renowned Serge Gainsborg, who paid tribute to his father in his last record, has struck out on his own with the upcoming release of Lady Luck. Drawing inspiration from a “difficult breakup,” Gainsbourg lyrically lays all of his emotions on the table with a rollicking, pop beat to support it. In the video for the title track “Lady Luck,” Gainsbourg himself sits at a card table with a couple of other gamblers, ultimately beating out two of them before meeting his own end at the end of the game. Seeing as how one of the pivotal lines of the song tells us that a woman “played with my heart like a card,” it isn’t too far-fetched to examine this video as Gainsbourg’s take on romance in light of his recent breakup. Here, Gainsbourg sees love as a gamble in which there are winners and losers, and fate plays no part in it.
As morose as that message comes across, “Lady Luck” itself is a very catchy tune, featuring Gainsbourg trying his hand at singing in English, another clear difference from his previous record, and he sings it quite well, albeit with a breathy French accent. Similar to the previous record, Gainsbourg will be collaborating with several other artists, including Anne Hathaway and Drew McConnell.
