Rockstar Games and Mass Media are releasing a tastefully curated soundtrack to their sensational and most recent installment of the Grand Theft Auto series. The Grand Theft Auto V box set will contain 59 tracks.
Are you tired of firing up your xbox with Grand Theft Auto Five just to listen to the amazing selection of music? Do you put on Radio Los Santos on the background of parties just to hear Big Boy unleash the latest Kendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz songs? Then check this out: on December 9nth, Rockstar Games and the New York based media network Mass Appeal will release an astoundingly comprehensive multi-media dual option box set special soundtrack of Grand Theft Auto V. There are many radio stations in the city of Los Santos, where the game takes place, and their music covers any genre you could possibly desire to listen to while traipsing around stealing cars and running gangs. There is Channel X, which blasts punk rock and hardcore punk, there is Los Santos Rock Radio, hosted by Kenny Loggins (remember the soundtrack to Top Gun?), which brings you back with songs like “If You Leave Me Now” by Chicago, but there is also radio FlyLo FM, whose DJ and curator is the artist Flying Lotus. And of course there is everything in between, from Reggae to World Music and Hip Hop. It’s unclear which of these songs will make up the 59 track special album, but we can be guaranteed that it will be as eclectic as the stations themselves are.
The soundtrack will be available on vinyl and CD, although the accoutrement included in each will be different. The vinyl package, with its beautiful thematic color coded records, will include a full color booklet and a lithograph poster. The CD package includes an informational booklet and a USB drive forged in the shape of a gold brick. Check out Pitchfork’s coverage for more information on design.
As the city of Los Santos is based largely on Los Angeles, Rockstar’s soundtrack supervisor, Ivan Pavlovich, naturally wanted to include references to the movements in popular music and other sub-genre niches who call their home LA. In an interview Pavlovich expanded on this:
There’s a station called Vinewood Boulevard Radio, which features Stephen [Pope] and Nate [Williams] from Wavves. This is a modern rock station, the embodiment of the young Los Angeles rock scene. For us Wavves is the most exciting, so it was pretty amazing to work with those guys.”
He also talked about the scope of the musical production in the game:
We have 15 radio stations, two talk radio stations, 240 licensed songs, and somewhere in the proximity of 20 movies worth of score. It’s the largest soundtrack that we’ve done, and the largest score that we’ve done.”
