A video of the new song “Six Months In Kansas City (Liberty Street)” from the album Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes has been released.
Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes is made up of 15 songs which are based on 24 recently discovered Bob Dylan lyrics. The album is set for release on November 11th via Electromagnetic Recordings/Harvest Records.
The New Basement Tapes is Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens (Carolina Chocolate Drops), Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket) and Marcus Mumford (Mumford and Sons) in collaboration with a 26 year old Bob Dylan who wrote these discovered lyrics. The group perform the new song live in this recently released video.
Dylan’s Basement Tapes were dozens of songs written and recorded by him in 1967. Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes celebrates the discovery of Dylan’s lyrics from that 1967 period that have never been heard before.
Costello is the main singer on this song. He is shown in the video strumming on the guitar while they record the song. He harmonizes well with other singers. All musicians are animated as they sing and play their respective instruments, but Costello really gets into the song. The chorus is repetitive, but powerful, thanks to the musicians that are part of the project.
Other songs the group has released from this new album include “Liberty Street”, “Spanish Mary”, “When I Get My Hands On You” , and “Married To My Hack”.
There will be a Showtime documentary to accompany the new album, which is set to debut November 21. It’s called Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued and examines the making of the album, as well as the historical cultural backdrop of Dylan’s original Basement Tapes.
Dylan himself will be releasing the whole collection of The Basement Tapes on November 4, according to Consequence of Sound. It is called The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 and has 138 songs.
