All of the music-turned-film aficionados have been waiting with baited breath for the final release of a trilogy of EPs that have come out by the group SQURL. They haven’t much longer to wait, as the group have very recently released a recording of the song “Francine Says,” which will feature on the final EP, simply titled EP #3.
SQURL undertook a very interesting project when they elected to unleash a series of 3 EPs packed to the brim with several heavy recordings, a staple of the groups sound since Jim Jarmusch helped form the group a couple of years ago. Jarmusch himself is a bit of an unknown to those who haven’t seen any of his films, the most recent being Only Lovers Left Alive starring Tilda Swinton. However, Jarmusch has developed a reputation for creating intellectual, outstanding work whether it be in his film or his music career. “Francine Says,” a song that will be featured on the third and final EP of the aforementioned series, is a musical romp through quicksand. It’s got a slow, molasses-laden beat, and lyrics that are practically being read one syllable at a time. Stretching into the four-minute mark, the songs gritty, sludgy rhythms and fuzzy guitar sounds evoke a kind of mainstream Syd Barrett feel to them, only the lyrics aren’t quite as far-out as something Barrett would have penned. The final result is a song that ultimately asks a lot of patience from the listener, but rewards that patience with a fantastic guitar wail at the end of the recording and a song that embodies that rare kind of music that one cannot simply put into a little genre box and have it sit comfortably.
