Though the competition was steep this year, Young Fathers won the Barclaycard Mercury Prize for their album Dead.
The competition was fierce this year, as Young Fathers competed for the £20,000 award against some of UK’s best recording artists. BBC News states, “Their record, Dead, beat 11 other albums from acts including Damon Albarn, Bombay Bicycle Club and bookmakers’ favourite, FKA Twigs.”
They won the Barclaycard Mercury Prize which is a big deal in the UK. According to Pitchfork, “They won the award, which honors the best British album of the past year, over albums by FKA twigs, Damon Albarn, Bombay Bicycle Club, Anna Calvi, and others.” Last year’s winner was James Blake.
Although many had expected FKA Twigs to win the award, the Scottish hip hop trio stuns the judges with their “unique take on British music,” says one of the judges. As in the past, the group seems to just make music effortlessly: “We go out and do what we do,” he told reporters afterwards. But the group has been known for making an eclectic form of music, by infusing various styles of music into their hip hop compositions. “The trio, who met at an under-16s hip-hop night, have developed a reputation for making a unique blend of music, utilising diverse influences that reflect their different backgrounds,” states BBC News.
