Sweet Apple has premiered a new music video for their song “Reunion”.
The band of rockers features J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.), Tim Parnin (Cobra Verde), John Petkovic (Cobra Verde), and Dave Sweetapple (Witch).
The song is from their album the Golden Age of Glitter, which came out this year. It is a duet featuring guest vocals by Robert Pollard (Guided by Voices).
The music video revisits the 1692 Salem Witch Trials and was filmed in Salem, Massachusetts and famous places, such as the House of Seven Gables.
The background story of the video is very creative. A skateboarding warlock named Sweetapple has come back to Salem from 1692, so he can steal the children’s Halloween candy. In the beginning of the video there are creepy sounds and the camera swings back and forth around a cemetery, as the story is told of children accusing people of witchcraft and sending them to their deaths during the witch trials. A warlock named Sweetapple “never fully died” and comes back every halloween to reunite with the children of Salem and snatch their candy.
Present-day children dressed up and trick-or-treating are then shown deprived of their candy by Sweetapple who skates away with it. They are determined to get it back and put up a great fight for their candy.
They are shown chasing him. A “field spy” is searching for him and one kid even wields a sword. Sweetapple finally falls and the children gleefully celebrate.
“Here’s to our reunion, back where it began,” is sung during the chorus and fits the video story well.
The music is typical rock with a catchy tune. The guitar is strongest, but the voices harmonize well.
In the end of the video, the viewer is left off with a picture of a hanging noose, the background doused with flames. People can be heard cheering and chanting. The sounds from the crowd could be imagined to have been quite similar during the witch trials.
The video is directed and shot by Petkovic. It is great to watch if you’re trying to get in the mood for Halloween:
