This week, Los Angeles-based rockers The Bots released a new video for “All I Really Want”, from their debut LP, Pink Palms. The video illustrates that the band’s brothers – Mikaiah and Anaiah Lei – must enjoy reading the popular list and quiz website, Buzzfeed.
The Bots new music video takes the form of a Buzzfeed listicle. The song’s lyrics comprise a numbered and scrollable list, much like you’d see on the site. And, yes, the video creators even included the quintessential Buzzfeed trademarks: GIFS, videos, and still images. Rest assured the video creators have included what the site’s avid readers have come to expect from Buzzfeed as well; meaning cute kittens, Spongebob, viral videos, and GIFs of the 90s TV show Fresh Prince. But, The Bots have taken it one step further by synching their lyrics to viral videos, such as Funny Or Die’s “I want my money!” from their sketch “The Landlord” playing on screen while Mikaiah Lei is singing “all I really, really want”. And, they’ve also included their own footage of the band playing before live audiences.
The “All I Really Want” video premiered on the technology site, Wired. In the article that accompanied the video, Wired described its effect as: “a slideshow of viral memorabilia, reminding us why everyone fell in love with listicles in the first place: they’re fun and full of energy. Just like a good rock and roll song.”
Looking beyond the list, the music for “All I Really Want” is an infectious high-energy style that bends elements of punk and garage rock.
