Bass Drum Of Death – Rip This

A Garage Anthem

Rip This is the latest project from Bass Drum Of Death. The opening track, “Electric,” brings you into the garage with the duo from Mississippi, right next to the dusty skis and that untouched treadmill. Bass Drum Of Death sounds more like the good ole boys from across the pond than something out of the deep south. What they do, they do well. Two to four minute tracks, a handful of chords, break downs and plenty angsty lyrics about being “Out for blood.” It is what one looks for in a garage band.

The feedback and heavy distortion on “Sin is in 10,” gets pretty crunchy but there is not much in the way of innovation. Maybe there shouldn’t be, why fix what isn’t broken, right? All music serves a purpose and Bass Drum Of Death provides another soundtrack for all those feelings that you just want to bury and turn into raw energy.

Rip This is a textbook garage rock album. It has a few songs on it like “Burn’s My Eye” that will get a crowd hopping and elbowing each other, but like most garage bands a lot of the tunes sound familiar. “Better Days” is that jam every pissed off kid needs when it’s time to be alone and be pissed off about a girl. It is worth a listen, especially if you have gotten tired of your other four chord band’s last album. Rip This might not get you excited, but perhaps that’s the point. Perhaps it’s all about two guys who are just stoked to rock the hell out of a garage.
