What began as an announcement for a new song, pressed on a 7-inch, that comes with a career spanning vinyl box set, has become an announcement of the reuniting of Sleater-Kinney.
Sub Pop Records released a statement on their website saying “It’s Official.” On January 19/20, the label will be releasing the band’s first album in ten years called No Cities To Love, with North American and European tours to follow.
The video for the single, “Bury Your Friends”, was also released alongside the announcement by Sub Pop Records, and boy is it strange. To help capture Sleater-Kinney’s classic punk and indie sound, the video is of a person, standing in front of a white wall, in a tan blazer, and mauve button up shirt while the lyrics to the song flash by in different sizes. Oh, did I mention the person has a crazy, mask on, with long white hair, mustache and beard. Starting with his back to the camera, he slowly turns around, begins moving his shoulders to the music, until finally dancing out of control until the cover art for the new album, No Cities To Love, appears with the date January 20, 2015 across the bottom.
The song which is about perseverance, is fitting considering the band had originally disbanded in 2006 following their appearance at Lollapalooza. The group which is made up of vocalist-guitarist Corin Tucker, guitarist-vocalist Carrie Brownstein and drummer Janet Weiss wrote in a joint Statement,
“We could not have made our music without your enthusiasm, passion, and loyalty. It is you who have made the entire journey worthwhile.”
The 13 show, U.S. portion of the tour is scheduled to begin on February 8th at the Knitting Factory in Spokane, Washington, while the 8-show European leg of the tour is set to begin in March of 2015.
Since the breakup, the girls haven’t been stagnant. Brownstein, along with Fred Armisen of SNL fame developed the sketch-Comedy Series Portlandia, while Weiss toured and recorded with her group Quasi, the Kicks, Bright Eyes and even teamed up with Brownstein in the group Wild Flag. Corin Tucker also toured and recorded with her band, the Corin Tucker Band.
According to Rolling Stone, after reuniting with the rest of the band earlier this year at a Pearl Jam concert, Brownstein was asked if she would like to record another album or tour with Sleater-Kinney, which she neither confirmed or denied, but Sub Pop Records made it clear that they had been,
“sitting on this secret for a while, but we’ve had to deal with in-the-red levels of excitement the ENTIRE time we’ve been harboring this knowledge. So kudos to us, Sub Pop Records, for keeping this secret for so long.“
The bands last album, The Woods was released in 2005.
