“Being Beige” is the first song out off the Pumpkins’ upcoming album- which will be released sooner than expected.
The Smashing Pumpkins said that they would release two new albums in 2015, but one is being released a little bit before that, according to Pitchfork. The album Monuments to an Elegy will be out December 9. The album is produced by Howard Willing, and includes drumming by Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee. The first song off the album, “Being Beige” was released today. The second album, Day for Night is still set to come out next year. This September the band also reissued their 1998 album Adore.
Billy Corgan told Rolling Stone, “People always ask me to explain songs, and honestly I can’t. But if there’s honesty in this lyric, it’s that there’s something amiss in our cosmos. Yet still, we must love.”
The song begins with an acoustic guitar, a few notes from a piano, and the lyrics: “I don’t love you, for what it’s worth…Cherry blossom, this is good-bye.” It’s an emotional song, to be sure, something that’s sad but powerful. It’s heartbreak, but it’s strong. The repetition of “The world’s on fire, have you heard?” alongside the swelling instrumentals makes it a moving song that’s worth a listen.
The Smashing Pumpkins’ last album, Oceania, made it onto Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of 2012; the publication described it as “the finest slab of cosmic prog…since the Pumpkins’ early-Nineties heyday.” Despite earlier rumors of the band breaking up, it looks like they’ve got a successful two albums coming up. The next two albums are for sure something to look forward to.
