Edgy but Indie
Founded in Seattle, Minus the Bear, an indie group, does a nice job of finding that hometown Seattle sound that music lovers have come to know quite well. Lost Loves, their newest album, is a mix of grunge and indie, with random bits of foreign language.
The album is a little edgier than the stereotypical “indie” sound which has become, at least in the mainstream, geared more in a folk direction. Rather, Minus the Bear, have honed this harder sound that still remains melodic.
Lost Loves, is an interesting collection of songs. They all work together, however, each song has its own personality. Minus the Bear has really seemed to have pinpointed the sound they want, and this album is a beautiful showcase of that with songs like “Your Private Sky,” which is has this haunting, dark beauty.
The album doesn’t necessarily leave the biggest impression on a first time listener, but it’s worth giving it a couple listens, because ultimately it is very catchy. It’s an album that would be good to both listen to in whole and just focus on, but it also works if you need something to just fade in the background. It’s an album that is upbeat enough to keep you interested and entertained, while still managing to juxtapose that with a deeper tone. Overall, it’s a pretty decent album that will definitely be getting more attention in the long run. It’s the type of album that you won’t listen to for a while, but when you do you’ll be interested again.
