Young Ejecta, previously known as Ejecta, have announced that they will be releasing a new album, The Planet, on Jan. 27th, 2015 via Driftless Recordings.
The Planet is the first album of new material from the electronic duo, following their name change controversy. In September, it was made public that Leanne Macomber and Joel Ford were seeking to rename their project due to a claim by a fellow DJ with a similarly spelled pseudonym. Eventually, with help from their fans, the duo settled on Young Ejecta.
“The original name Ejecta is a term which refers to the sediment which settles on the floor of the ocean after there has been a volcanic eruption or seismic shift,” according to mxdwn’s Rachel Schranck.
So, what can we expect from the new album? Will it be drastically different given the duo’s renaming?
“The Planet was born from electronic minimalism, euro disco, and 70s pop balladry,” according to a press release. And, more to the point of the above questions, from a lyrical standpoint the new album is an expansion of the universal themes of love, loss, and death that the duo explored on Dominae. And, according to the press release, it is best described as “manic depressive”, as there is renewed sense of hope, but there is also a deep-seated sense of despair.
In order to achieve the overall sound of the album, Joel Ford was very regimented. His goal was to enhance “the sense of simplicity and exaggerating the mayhem”, according to a press release. His arrangements vary from the spare to the ornate and self involved on The Planet. The sounds bend beautifully against the melodic and dramatic moments, without breaking, which is a testament to Ford’s production abilities.
This week, the duo released a album teaser trailer for The Planet. In the teaser, clips of the album’s tracks are played, and it soon becomes apparent that although there may be some euro disco and 1970s pop flavors swirling around on the songs, the record is underpinned by electronic dance beats. And, we have included the video as well as the album’s cover art, below. But, be aware that BOTH have been deemed not safe for work.
Lastly, ahead of the release, Macomber and Ford will be playing at Babycastles on Oct. 24th, 2014 as a part of the Driftless Recordings & GODMODE Party.
