LISTEN: Foo Fighters Release New Song “Something from Nothing”

On October 16th, the Foo Fighters have premiered the first single, “Something from Nothing”, from their upcoming album, Sonic Highways. Additionally, it is the perfect way to set the mood for the band’s documentary that premieres on Friday Oct. 17th, 2014, via HBO.

“Something from Nothing” was recorded in Chicago with music producer Steve Albini, according to Consequence of Sound. The song begins with Dave Grohl’s vocal backed by a simple guitar line, before breaking into a jam with the entire band. It is an infectious hard driving rock song that combines the band’s alternative rock background with psychedelic rock influences, and features a little bit of funk, added in for spice.

In addition to being released ahead of the documentary premiere, “Something from Nothing” was released in the middle of – for lack of better words – Foo Fighter’s week on The Late Show with David Letterman. Since Monday, the rockers have teamed up with some of their influences, as well as some of their contemporaries, to cover series of the band’s favorite songs. So far, we’ve been treated to: a cover of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” featuring country and southern-rock musician Zac Brown; Seattle’s legendary rock sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson teaming up with Grohl and the Foos to perform a Heart classic, “Kick It Out”; and, Louisiana swap rock and blues man Tony Joe White to perform his hit “Polk Salad Annie”.

“Polk Salad Annie” was a hit for White in the late 1960’s. The rendition that White performed with the Foos is a swampy bluesy affair, as Spin pointed out. Grohl joins White on the vocal duties, but recognizes – as in the documentary – that he is in a supporting role as a musician and allows White’s star to shine. Additionally, Grohl and the Foo Fighters performed a special Letterman web exclusive version of “Miracle”.
