Karen O was recently captured performing in London, playing covers of the Doors’ “Indian Summer” and “Radiohead’s “High & Dry”.
“Indian Summer” is one of the songs on her debut solo record that just came out in September called Crush Songs.
O’s cover of “Indian Summer” was slower than the original, but pretty. The haunting background music calls to mind the recollecting of distant memories, of lost days that were sweet, but now are gone.
The original song by the Doors had more of a beat and was all around more of a feel good song. O’s soft sweet voice works well in this song. She swayed with the music and really seemed into it, humming as the song faded out.
Holly Miranda, a musician who was part of the backing band for O’s show, sang the vocals for “High & Dry,” while also skillfully playing guitar. Her memorable voice floated over the crowd. The audience got very into it and joined in singing the chorus with her and O. She also made the song more acoustic and soft than the original.
O is best known as the lead singer of the American rock band the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. She also composed and wrote lyrics for “The Moon Song,” which was featured in the film Her and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song in January 2014.Watch O perform another song called “Rapt” off her new album.
Actress Elle Fanning also made a fun music video for O, swaying and dancing along to her song “Ooo” behind the stage of the New York Metropolitan Opera House. It was directed by O’s friend Spike Jonze.
