Broken Bells just released a video for their song “After the Disco”. The album the song came off of shares its title and was released this past February.
The American Indie Rock band created a video that continually moves and spins, but doesn’t really seem to go any place. It begins showing each band member playing their respective instrument and spinning past us. James Mercer is singing with the band, but then the camera follows him as he steps away from the stage. Everyone around him is frozen, but before their inexplicable freeze they were clearly in the middle of partying around the stage.
Mercer steps around them and sings “How did I get into this winding maze of love?” as he goes through the same door multiple times, continually circling through the same moment and looking somewhat hopeless. He finally walks through another door, but then walks in a circle around this room as well, which contains a woman bent over a television set.
The video therefore goes along with lyrics of the song such as: “Round and round until we go nowhere.”
Then Brian Burton, aka Danger Mouse, who plays the drums for the band, takes Mercer’s place of walking around in circles, until he finally gets back to his designated space at the drum set.
The video essentially ends the way it began, filming the band members playing the song as the camera swings around and around–we’ve essentially come full circle. The viewer is left contemplating if in the midst of the video they really got anywhere at all.
The band recently released a video for “Control,” another song on the After the Disco album.
Broken Bells will also be one of many performing at the Life Is Beautiful Music Festival in Las Vegas, held from October 24 to October 26.
