David Letterman has been hosting The Late Show for twenty-one years. While that number falls nearly a decade short of Johnny Carsons thirty years as host of the Tonight Show, neither Carson nor Letterman has ever had a guest like the one Letterman featured on his show that aired October 8.
In what may go down as a significant moment in American television history, David Letterman played host to a Japanese hologram as his musical guest. The hologram, known as Hatsune Miku, performed the hit single “Sharing the World” on the soundstage, and has become a rising virtual pop star, recently opening for Lady Gagas artRave: The ARTPOP Ball Tour.” While already an established pop star in Japan, the Late Show appearance was the first for Hatsune Miku on American television. While not a true “organic” hologram in the sense that “she” can perform completely independently of any other machine, the Late Show performance elicited a lively reaction from the crowd while getting an unusually neutral reaction from Letterman himself.
After the Lady Gaga tour, the Late Show performance, and her appearance at the US Expo, it’s not too far-fetched to think that we may see a full-fledged tour out of the cyber celebrity in the coming months.
