This weekend in Brooklyn, Afghan Whigs were joined by Usher. Again. The Whigs are an American rock band from Cincinnati who started out in 1986, but reformed in 2011.
It’s the 21-year anniversary of the Afghan Whig’s ground-breaking 1993 album, Gentlemen. The Whig’s played an anniversary show in Brooklyn. And as a surprise guest? The one and only Usher. The Whigs are known for doing covers of soul songs live. Last tour, the Whigs covered Drake’s “Over My Dead Body” but turned it into their own version of “When We Two Parted.” Last year was the first time they performed with Usher at the South by Southwest festival. At this anniversary show, which you can watch below, Usher came out at the encore. He performed “Climax” with the Whigs, and it was an amazing performance. The fans were clearly delighted.
The video starts off with Greg Dulli saying how “a year and a half ago we were playing down in Texas, out of the blue. And I think we had not planned on making a record after that…we haven’t sung this song since then, and I think it’s fitting to sing it tonight!” At that moment, Usher walks out on stage, calling out: “Brooklyn make some noise! Give it up for Afghan Whigs!”
