The official release of the soundtrack for the feature film Gone Girl is out today. The soundtrack is a collaboration between Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and composer Atticus Ross.
It was announced that Reznor and Ross would be working on the soundtrack in January 2014, though it was far from a surprise to those who follow their work. They have worked together twice before, and both times were for David Fincher films, just like Gone Girl. Their past work can be heard on the soundtracks for The Social Network, which won an Oscar for its score, and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which was nominated for a Golden Globe for its score.
The score for Fincher’s most recent film adaptation of a popular novel will be a bit different from the previous collaborations between the artists, though. In the past, Reznor has been known to do industrial rock-style sounds, even when he isn’t playing with Nine Inch Nails. For Gone Girl, they worked with live orchestra for parts of the score because Fincher wanted something that seems warm and fuzzy at first, then begins to “curdle and unravel.”
The soundtrack is available online at the Nine Inch Nails store, where buyers will find three different package options. The cheapest, which is $11.99, will buy just the digital download of the soundtrack. The next tier is $17.99, which will includes the CD pre-order and a digital download of the album. Aside from working on the Gone Girl score, Reznor has spent part of 2014 touring with his band Nine Inch Nails. They co-headlined North American tour with Soundgarden this summer, bringing a wave of 1990s alternative rock nostalgia to the masses. The tour was broken up into three parts, with Oneohtrix Point Never opening for the first part, The Dillinger Escape Plan acting as opener for the second leg of the tour and Cold Cave opening for the final part. At the end of August, the two groups played huge, energetic show at the Hollywood Bowl.
